Date: Oct 11th, 2012
Time: 7pm
Place: EE1 Building (Electrical Engineering)
Room 403
University of Washington Campus
Directions: http://www.ee.washington.edu/about/contact.html
Subject: IT on Coast Guard Icebreakers
Presenter: Sarah Kaye

The Coast Guard Cutter Healy, our only functional ocean-going icebreaker, goes places that very few ships go. Our mission is scientific research and our motto is “From the Arctic, Knowledge.” High latitudes and extreme conditions force some unusual technology choices. I will discuss our adaptations to our operating conditions and take questions.

Bio:
I have always been an IT generalist, keeping the blinky lights on while being able to communicate in English with the users. I enjoy seeing polar bears from a distance.
